Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Address Key Global Issues at the 79th UN General Assembly Session

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is set to represent Pakistan at the high-level segment of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 23 to 27, 2024, in New York. His participation underscores Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to multilateralism and the critical role of the United Nations in promoting peace, security, and prosperity on a global scale.

In his address to the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2024, Prime Minister Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s dedication to supporting international peace efforts. His speech will focus on long-standing global issues, including the question of Palestine and the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Both issues have remained central to Pakistan’s foreign policy and continue to be vital topics on the UN Security Council’s agenda.

The Prime Minister will also emphasize the need for reforming international economic relations to address global inequalities. He is expected to call for the restructuring of the international financial architecture and urge world leaders to take decisive action on climate change, a challenge that disproportionately affects countries like Pakistan. Additionally, he will highlight the rising tide of Islamophobia and call for united global efforts to counter this growing issue.

On the sidelines of the UNGA session, Prime Minister Sharif will attend several high-level meetings, including the “High-Level Meeting on Existential Threats Posed by Sea-Level Rise” and the UN Security Council's Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace.” He will also engage with world leaders to discuss advancing the global sustainable development agenda, with bilateral meetings planned with the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly.

This session of the UN General Assembly provides Pakistan with a crucial platform to voice its stance on regional and international issues. As Pakistan prepares to become a member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term, Prime Minister Sharif will highlight Pakistan’s commitment to the UN Charter and its role in preventing conflict, fostering peace, and promoting prosperity worldwide.
