London, August 21, 2023 - A significant number of British Pakistani Christians convened outside the Pakistan High Commission in London, protesting the recent violent attack in Jaranwala, Pakistan. This devastating incident, which saw 21 churches and numerous Christian homes targeted, was instigated by a mob of Muslim extremists, reacting to alleged desecrations of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad.
Under the rallying cry "Christian Lives Matter," the protesters showcased their unity with the affected families who have suffered immense losses, both materially and emotionally. With placards reading "No More Christian Persecution in Pakistan," the demonstrators called for justice, reforms, and the safeguarding of religious minorities, advocating for equal rights for all in Pakistan.
Joseph Jansen, Chairperson of Voice for Justice, voiced his concerns over the misuse of religious sentiments under blasphemy laws, which culminated in the violent attack. He pointed out the tragic irony of the slogan "Lab bak Lab bak ya Rasool Allah," meant to signify prayer and unity, being misused as a rallying cry for destruction. Jansen strongly condemned the baseless allegations of desecration that served as a catalyst for the brutal assault, where chemicals and petrol were employed to set structures on fire.
The protest also highlighted the local police and security agencies' inability to shield citizens from extremist violence, marking a significant failure on the state's part.
Pastor Ajmal Chaughti commented on Pakistan's quickness to label the global treatment of Muslims as Islamophobia, yet it dismisses the genuine concerns of religious minorities within its borders as mere propaganda. He emphasized the need to end such double standards based on religious affiliations and called for Pakistan to genuinely address the equal treatment of its citizens.
Asif Mall, representing the Alliance of Pakistan Christian Organisations, underscored the importance of addressing crimes against Christians and ensuring justice is served. He reminded attendees of the 1997 Shanti Nagar, Khanewal violence and the subsequent lack of accountability.
The gathering concluded by stressing the pressing need for reforms in Pakistan, encompassing justice for victims, protection for religious minorities, and an end to faith-based discrimination. They fervently appealed to the Pakistani government to consider their demands and take decisive steps towards fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society for all its members.
